Description

Flavored with cinnamon and lightly sweetened, these thin and crispy apple chips are a delicious fall snack that the whole family will love! Learn how to make these homemade apple chips in the oven or air fryer. Totally gluten-free and vegan too.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Slice Apples: Slice apples very thinly with a mandoline slicer. Remove any seeds.
  2. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: Combine the powdered sugar, brown sugar and ground cinnamon in a bowl.
  3. Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar Over Apple Slices: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay out apple slices in a single layer. Using a sieve, sprinkle them with the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Flip the slices over and sprinkle them again.
  4. To Bake in Oven: Preheat the oven to 200F. Place in the oven and bake for about 1 hour on one side. Flip the apple slices over and continue baking for about 40-60 minutes. Then let the apple chips cool on the counter.
  5. To Cook in Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to to 320F. Place the cinnamon sugar-coated apple slices in 1-2 layers in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 15-20 minutes, checking every 5 minutes and turning.
  6. Cool to Fully Crisp: Let the apple chips cool full at room temperature, after which they will become firmer and crispier.

Notes

Apples: You can use any type of apples you have on hand (granny smith, red delicious, fuji, golden delicious, gala, etc). Make sure to use a mandoline slicer to make sure the apple slices are evenly thin.

Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar (also known as confectioner’s sugar) is sugar that has been processed till very fine. If you are diabetic or insulin-resistant, I highly recommend using powdered monkfruit sweetener (a 1:1 powdered sugar substitute that is zero glycemic index and will not raise your blood sugar).

Brown Sugar: I used dark brown sugar, but light brown sugar, cane sugar or coconut sugar will work too. If you are diabetic or insulin-resistant, I highly recommend using brown granulated monkfruit sweetener (a 1:1 brown sugar substitute that is zero glycemic index and will not raise your blood sugar).

Cinnamon: I love the combination of ground cinnamon with apples for a cozy fall vibe. Plus, the cinnamon adds a beautiful brown color to the apple chips.

Storing: These apple chips are best eaten on the same day as they will lose their crispiness as time passes. If you have any leftover, store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days. If you want to re-crisp them before eating, simply place them in the heated air fryer or oven for a few minutes to crisp them up again.
