How to Make Apple Pie Spice:

Cardamom pods and ground allspice berries in mortar
Grind Cardamom & Allspice: Place the cardamom pods and allspice berries in a mortar. Use a pestle to gently crush them, releasing their essential oils. Take your time to break them into smaller pieces. Remove the husks from the cardamom seeds as you grind, ensuring only the flavorful seeds remain. Continue grinding until the mixture turns into a fine, uniform powder.
A bowl with spices
Combine Ground Spices with Cinnamon, Ginger and Nutmeg: Transfer the ground cardamom and allspice to a mixing bowl. Add the ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and freshly ground nutmeg. Mix thoroughly until all spices are evenly combined.
Sifting apple pie spice blend through fine-mesh sieve
Sift Mixture: For the smoothest texture, sift the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. This ensures that your apple pie spices are lump-free and ready for baking.

Use or Store: Store the finished spice blend in a dry, airtight container or mason jar. Keep it in a cool, dark place to preserve its aroma and flavor for months.

Dish by Dish Tips:

  • Toast Cardamom & Allspice: If you wish, feel free to toast the cardamom pods and whole allspice berries in a dry skillet for 1–2 minutes before grinding to intensify the aroma. Alternatively, if you don’t have cardamom pods or allspice berries, you can use 3 teaspoons ground cardamom, and 1 teaspoon ground allspice instead.
  • Sift for Extra Fine Mixture: To get a really fine mixture that, I recommend passing the final mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to get rid of any large clumps or pieces.
  • Ways to Use This Mix: This apple pie spice is great for making apple pie, but it’s also great for flavoring apple muffins, apple pancakes, oatmeal, as well as spiced lattes!
