Recipe Notes:

  • Apple: I used a Pink Lady apple, but you can use any type of apples you have on hand. Alternatively, you could also use white peaches or white melons instead of apples for a white fruit alternative.
  • Fresh Berries: I like using fresh blueberries and strawberries because they look better than frozen berries. You can also use cubed juicy watermelon in place of strawberries for another red fruit alternative.

How to Make this Patriotic Salad Recipe (Step by Step):

1. Prepare Strawberries

Rinse the strawberries and then cut them into quarters. Place the cut strawberries in a large mixing bowl.

Sliced fresh strawberries on wooden board.

2. Add Blueberries

Wash the blueberries and add them to the bowl with the strawberries. Toss the berries together very gently to mix.

3. Create Apple Stars

Wash and slice the apple into evenly thick slices. Soak the apple slices in a bowl of salt water (using 1/2 teaspoon salt for every cup of water) for five minutes, before rinsing the apple slices under running tap water.

Then use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out stars from the apple flesh (leaving out the skin).

4. Combine Everything

Add the star-shaped apple pieces to the bowl with the other fruits. Toss everything gently to mix without crushing the fruits.

5. Chill and Serve

Chill the red white and blue fruit salad for at least 30 minutes until ready to serve.

Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:

  • Soak Apples to Prevent Browning: In order to prevent the apple stars from oxidizing and turning brown, I strongly recommend that you take the time to soak the apple slices in salt water for 5 minutes before cutting them into star shapes.
  • Chill Before Serving: I find that this red, white and blue salad taste best chilled. So make sure to place the salad in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap and then chill for at least 30 minutes or until ready to serve.

  1. I really love this patriotic fruit salad and I cannot have enough of it.
Firstly, It is so simple to assemble it together with the best fruits especially the different berries (my favorite fruit which does not spike my blood sugar), and secondly, each bite into the chilled salad is so refreshing and yummy!

Thank you Felicia for posting this on your blog 🙂
