Description
Juicy homemade gluten-free burgers that are packed with flavor and come together easily. They’re the perfect main dish for summer grilling, or cooking in the air fryer, skillet or oven! Serve them with a gluten-free bun or eat them on their own with a side of fries or salad. Totally dairy-free too.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds beef cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 pounds chicken fillets, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 onions
- 1/2 cup unsweetened dairy-free milk
- 1 cup gluten-free white bread
- 2 eggs
- 4 tablespoons chopped parsley
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Process Meat and Onions: Grind beef, chicken fillet and onion using a meat grinder. Alternate the pieces to make the minced meat easier to mix. (Alternatively, if you are using storebought ground beef and ground chicken, then you only need to process the onions until finely ground and mix it with the ground meat).
- Soak Gluten-Free Bread Crumbs in Milk: Trim the crusts from the gluten-free bread, then tear the bread into small pieces. Place the gluten-free bread crumbs in a bowl and pour in the dairy-free milk, stirring until each piece is soaked.
- Mix Ingredients: Add the chopped parsley, eggs and soaked gluten-free bread crumbs, as well as salt and pepper to the bowl with the ground beef, chicken and onions. Mix everything thoroughly until the ingredients are well distributed.
- Form Patties: Use a hamburger patty maker to shape the mixture into round patties about 4 inches in diameter and about 1/2 inch thick (you should get about 10 to 12 patties, depending on the size of your patties). Alternatively, if you don’t have a patty maker, you can use a cookie cutter for shaping or simply shape the mixture into evenly-sized circles with your hands.
- Chill Before Cooking: If cooking on the same day, let the gluten-free patties chill in the fridge in a single layer for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
(1) GRILL: Heat up the grill to high heat and cook 3-4 minutes per side until the meat is done the way you like it.
(2) AIR FRYER: Place patties in a single layer in the preheated air fryer basket ( 380F) and air-fry for 10 minutes. Then turn over and fry for another 8 minutes. If the burger patties are thicker, the air frying time will need to be increased.
(3) SKILLET: Alternatively, you can pan-fry the burgers in a little oil over medium-high heat in a skillet for 5 minutes, flipping them over and cooking them on the other side for another 5 minutes until cooked through.
(4) OVEN: Cook the gluten-free patties in the oven at 380F for 10 minutes on one side and 10 minutes on the other.
Notes
Meat: In this gluten-free burger recipe, I used a 1:1 mix of beef and chicken. However, feel free to add more or less beef or chicken (or only use one type of meat) if you prefer. If you prefer not to grind the meat at home, you can simply use store-bought ground beef and ground chicken, then you only need to process the onions until finely ground and mix it with the ground meat.
Onions: I used yellow onions, but white onions or red onions will work too.
Milk: I used unsweetened dairy-free milk (almond milk, cashew milk, rice milk, oat milk, etc) to keep this recipe dairy-free, but if you are not lactose-intolerant, go ahead and use regular milk instead.
Gluten-Free Bread: I recommend using gluten-free white bread for best results. If you are lactose-intolerant, make sure the bread is dairy-free too. Alternatively, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, go ahead and use regular white bread instead.
Eggs: Eggs are necessary to bind the ingredients together, so make sure to add them in.
Parsley: I like adding fresh parsley for a pop of color and flavor. Alternatively, if you don’t have fresh parsley on hand, you can use 1 1/3 tablespoon of dried parsley instead.
Condiments: For flavor, I’ve used salt and ground black pepper. However, you can also add garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin etc. Or if you like a bit of heat, feel free to add a pinch of ground cayenne pepper or red chili powder.
Freezing: If you don’t plan to cook the gluten-free burgers on the same day, place the gluten-free burgers on a cutting board, cover them with plastic wrap, and place them in the freezer for at least 2 hours until they are frozen. Once frozen, transfer the frozen burgers to a freezer-safe bag or food container and store them in the freezer. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator before cooking.
