Recipe Notes + Substitutions:

  • Ground Beef: I used ground beef, but feel free to use other types of ground meat (such as ground turkey, ground chicken or ground pork) if you prefer.
  • Condiments: For seasoning, I’ve used ground paprika, dried parsley and ground black pepper. Feel free to add other spices if you prefer (such as garlic powder or onion powder).
  • Onion: You can use white onions, yellow onions or red onions.
  • Potatoes: Make sure to slice the potatoes uniformly (approximately 1/4-inch thick) so they cook evenly throughout the recipe. I used Yukon gold potatoes, but red potatoes will work too.
  • Carrots: Likewise, slice the carrots uniformly so that they cook evenly as well.
  • Broth: I used beef broth to enhance the flavor of the ground beef. If you are using ground turkey or ground chicken, you can use chicken broth instead.
  • Cheese: I used shredded dairy-free cheese to keep this recipe dairy-free. However, if you are not lactose-intolerant, go ahead and use your favorite cheese (Cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Colby Jack, etc.)
