A Good Side of Fries… Makes Everything Better
I don’t know about you, but in my home, we’re BIG FANS of crispy fries.
And while regular fries made with potatoes will always be our favorite side dish, these super crispy sweet potato fries are an extremely close second.
The next time you want an appetizer, side dish or snack, make these spicy sweet potato fries.
Let me tell you why.
Why This Recipe Works:
- Simple Ingredients: The few main ingredients required for these spicy sweet potato fries are easily found at the local grocery store (nothing fancy required!).
- Crispy Texture: Biting into a crunchy, crispy sweet potato fry is almost as close as it gets to culinary heaven on earth. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Trust me – these fries are goooood.
- Amazing Flavor: With ground cinnamon for sweetness, chili powder for a bit of heat, and garlic for savory taste, the flavor profile is just perfect.
- Totally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Vegan: The best part is that this homemade sweet potato fries recipe is 100% gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan, which means that even those with Celiac disease, or those with gluten or lactose intolerances, or those simply on a gluten-free diet or vegan diet can enjoy it without worries!

Recipe Notes + Substitutions
- Sweet Potatoes: I like using fresh sweet potatoes when I have them, but feel free to use frozen sweet potato fries as well.
- Oil: I like using sunflower oil because I always have a bottle of it around. However, you may use other vegetable oils for frying instead.
- Cinnamon: In this recipe for spiced sweet potato fries, ground cinnamon is a key ingredient because of the particular flavor it lends to the recipe. Make sure you include it, unless you don’t enjoy the taste of cinnamon.
- Chili Powder: Adding chili powder gives these fries a kick of heat. You may also use ground red pepper, cayenne powder, ground paprika or ground black pepper if you prefer.
- Garlic Powder: Adding garlic powder gives extra dimension to the flavor profile of these fries. Alternatively, you may use onion powder too.
- Salt: I used normal table salt, but feel free to use fine sea salt or fine Himalayan pink salt too.
How to Make Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries (Step by Step):
1. Heat Oil in Skillet
Pour the sunflower oil in a pot or skillet and heat up the oil over medium high heat.
2. Peel and Cut Sweet Potatoes
While the oil is heating up in the pot, peel the raw sweet potatoes and use a sharp knife to cut them into evenly thin straight sticks on a cutting board.
3. Test Oil for Readiness
After the oil has heated for at least 7 minutes it should be hot enough, but test by sticking in one sweet potato to see if it begins frying. Once it does, the oil is ready.
4. Fry Sweet Potato Sticks
Place the cut sweet potatoes straight into the hot oil. Once they have turned from a pale orange/pink to a dark burgundy orange they are done, about 6 minutes.
5. Prepare Seasoning Mixture
While the fries are cooking, mix all the seasonings together in a separate small bowl.
6. Transfer Fries to a Bowl
Remove the hot fries from the oil and transfer them to a large bowl or plate.
7. Coat Fries with Seasoning
While the fries are still wet with oil sprinkle the cinnamon chili seasoning mix over the fries and toss them with a thin spatula to coat the fries evenly.
8. Serve and Enjoy
Serve the sweet potato fries with a dipping sauce of choice and enjoy!
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- Fresh or Frozen Sweet Potatoes: I like using fresh sweet potatoes when I have them, but feel free to use frozen sweet potato fries as well.
- Change Up the Seasoning: I’ve use a sweet and spicy seasoning combination for this homemade sweet potato fries, but go ahead and use your favorite condiments. Not a fan of heat? Leave out the chili powder. Don’t love cinnamon? Omit it. Use whatever seasoning suits your fancy.
- For a Sweeter Taste: If you want these fries to be on the sweeter side, you can toss in some brown sugar or coconut sugar to the seasoning.
Sauces/Dips to Go with Crispy Sweet Potato Fries:
- 5-Minute Sriracha Chili Sauce (Gluten-Free, Vegan)
- Walnut Basil Pesto (Gluten-Free, Vegan)
- Easy Garlic Aioli (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)
- Tomato Ketchup
- BBQ Sauce
- Mustard
- Mayonnaise
What to Serve with Spiced Sweet Potato Fries:
Recipe FAQs:
If these spicy sweet potato fries do not turn out crispy, it could be due to the fact that they were not cut thinly enough. For best results, make sure you get a thin slice (1/4 inch thick fries similar to french fries) that make for easy frying, and you’ll get perfectly crunchy sweet potato fries!
When you season your sweet potato fries will depend on your method of cooking them. If you are deep-frying the fries as in this recipe, it’s best to season them right after they are fried (when they are still wet with oil so the seasoning will stick to the fries). If you are baking or air frying the sweet potatoes, then it is best to season them before cooking.
These gluten free sweet potato fries are best eaten just after they are cooked as they will lose their crispiness over time. If you do have leftover fries, place them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat the fries in the oven or in the air fryer at 400F for 5 minutes before eating.
