Bruschetta: The Perfect Appetizer!
Bruschetta is a common Italian antipasto (appetizer) that is basically grilled or toasted bread that has been brushed with olive oil and served with toppings such as diced tomatoes and fresh herbs.
It’s the ideal finger food for a party or summer potluck, firstly because it looks beautiful, vibrant, and because it’s tasty and crunchy and your guests are gonna love it, especially if you serve it with a beautiful snack board.
Most bruschetta is made with regular bread (which contains gluten), but today, we’ll be making a gluten-free version by using gluten-free baguettes!
(Plus, since it’s summertime, and tomatoes are at their peak, this is a great way to use up all that summer bounty!)
Why this Recipe Works:
- Simple Ingredients: The main ingredients required for this easy gluten-free bruschetta recipe are easily available at your local grocery stores (nothing fancy required!).
- Very Easy to Make: Simply brush the bread slices with oil before toasting them and topping the crunchy bread with a super flavorful tomato-basil mixture. The easiest appetizer ever!
- Totally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free & Vegan: The best part is that this bruschetta recipe is 100% gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan, which mean that even those with Celiac disease or gluten or lactose intolerances can enjoy it without issues!

Recipe Notes + Substitutions:
- Baguette: I used a gluten-free baguette (either store-bought or make your own gf baguette) to keep this recipe gluten-free. Alternatively if you don’t have a baguette, you can also use other types of gluten-free bread. However, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, go ahead and use a regular baguette instead.
- Tomatoes: Make sure to get red, ripe tomatoes that are sweet and juicy (roma tomatoes or regular round tomatoes are great). Since there are so few ingredients in this bruschetta recipe, and tomatoes are a key ingredient, get the best tomatoes possible.
- Basil: I love the beautiful taste of fresh basil which complements the tomatoes very well. Make sure to add the basil in, it makes a whole world of a difference!
- Olive Oil: I recommend using extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor, but you may also use other types of vegetable oil (such as sunflower oil, canola oil, avocado oil, etc.)
- Dried Herbs: I like using a mix of dried oregano and dried parsley for extra flavor, but feel free to use whichever dried herbs you like.
- Cream Cheese: I used plain dairy-free cream cheese to keep this recipe dairy-free. However, if you are not lactose-intolerant, go ahead and use regular cream cheese instead.
How to make Gluten-Free Bruschetta (Step by Step):
1. Preheat Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. Slice Baguette and Brush with Oil
Slice the gluten-free baguette into evenly sliced pieces of about 1-inch thick.
Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and brush each with olive oil. Place them in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
3. Prepare Tomato Topping
While the bread being toasted in the oven, remove the seeds and from the tomatoes and cut the tomatoes into small even cubes. Finely chop the basil.
Combine the cubed tomatoes, chopped fresh basil, dried herbs, salt, and black pepper in a bowl and mix well until you get a homogeneous mixture.
4. Cool Toasts Slightly
Remove the toasted bread from the oven and let it cool slightly.
5. Spread Cream Cheese (Optional)
If you wish, feel free to spread a thin layer of dairy-free cream cheese on each slice of toasted bread.
6. Top with Tomato Basil Mixture
Top with the tomato and basil mixture. Drizzle a little more olive oil over the tomato topping if you wish.
7. Serve and Enjoy
Serve the bruschetta immediately to ensure the bread remains crispy.
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- Use Your Favorite Type of Bread: I prefer using a baguette for this recipe, but feel free to use any type of gluten-free bread you have on hand. Just make sure to slice it into even thickness so the bruschetta slices will toast evenly.
- Prepare Topping Beforehand: If you wish, feel free to prepare the tomato-basil topping mixture a day before, but only toast the bread slices just before serving (this is to ensure that the toasts are still crunchy when eaten).
- Optional Add-Ins: If you love the taste of garlic, feel free to add finely minced garlic to the tomato-basil mixture. Alternatively you can also make gluten-free garlic bread bruschetta by making gluten-free garlic bread and then topping it with the tomato mixture.
