What is A Charcuterie Board?

If you’ve never been exposed to the glorious wonder of a charcuterie board, your life is about to be changed!

Very simply, ‘charcuterie‘ is French for cured meat.

And a charcuterie board is basically an appetizer that is typically served on either a wooden board or a stone slate, comprising primarily of a various types of meat (both cured or cooked), cheeses, crackers or bread.

In my opinion, this meat and cheese board is an essential starter or finger food for serving at holiday parties or family gatherings – and is a perfect way to impress your guests on special ocassions!

Recipe Notes + Substitutions:

  • Chutney: Feel free to use any fruit chutney of your choice (I’ve use mango chutney, but apple chutney or pear chutney make delicious options too). Alternatively, you can also use either honey or maple syrup, whose sweetness will complement the savory cheese board well.
  • Cheese: I used a mix of cheddar cheese, brie cheese and blue cheese, but feel free to use any types of cheese you fancy such as mozzarella cheese, goat cheese (preferably a mix of hard cheeses and soft cheese). If you are lactose-intolerant and would like to make a gluten-free dairy-free charcuterie board, go ahead and use dairy-free cheeses instead.
  • Meats: I like using a mixed assortment of cured and uncured meats. In this case I’ve used salami, ham and pepperoni. Feel free to use whatever you like or have on hand!
  • Crackers: You can either use gluten-free “Ritz-style” crackers or your favorite gluten-free crackers! Alternatively, you may also use gluten-free breadsticks or tortilla chips instead of crackers.
  • Nuts: Having some nuts on your gluten-free cheese board will add a nice contrast to the creaminess of the cheeses. I like a mix of almonds and walnuts, but you can also use pistachios, cashews or macadamia nuts.
  • Fruits: Since the cured meats and cheeses tend to be on the saltier side, I highly recommend having fresh fruits (I’ve used grapes and figs) that are on the sweeter side to balance out the salty flavor – which are complementary flavor profiles. Alternatively, you may also use apple slices, pear slices (for a fall cheese board) or fresh berries (for a more spring or summer themed cheese board).

Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:

  • Make it Vegan: If you want to create a vegan charcuterie board, feel free to use vegan cheeses instead.
  • Optional Add-Ons: Feel free to include other savory foods such as olives, anchovies if you wish. Alternatively, for a more refreshing taste, you may also add vegetable crudités (such as celery sticks, carrot sticks, tomatoes) alongside a dip such as hummus or baba ganoush.
  • Add Dried Fruits: You may also add some dried fruits (such as raisins, dried cranberries, dried prunes etc).
