Homemade Tortilla Chips in the Air Fryer
We love our handy air fryer (I’m telling you, this kitchen appliance is magic!). Check out all our air fryer recipes here.
The latest thing we’re making with it are these delicious air fryer corn chips that can literally be eaten with anytime, with anything and everything or on their own!
Making your own tortilla chips is actually way easier than it sounds, and might actually be cheaper than buying a bag of store-bought chips! Plus, you can flavor the homemade chips anyway you like.
Why This Recipe Works:
- Simple Ingredients: The ingredients required for these homemade air fried corn chips are easily accessible at the local grocery store (nothing fancy required!).
- Very Easy to Make: A batch of homemade corn tortilla chips is ready in just 25 minutes!
- Perfect Texture and Flavor: Tasty, flavorful and impossibly crunchy, these homemade air fryer corn chips make a great appetizer or tasty snack with salsa, guacamole or hummus! Everyone will be asking for seconds!
- Healthier than Deep-Fried Chips: These air-fried chips use very little oil compared to deep-fried chips and cleanup is a breeze!
- Totally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan: The best part is that these air fried corn tortilla chips are 100% gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan, which means that even those with Celiac disease or gluten or dairy intolerances, or those simply on a gluten-free diet or vegan diet can enjoy this salty snack without worries!

Recipe Notes + Substitutions:
- Tortillas: I used gluten-free soft corn tortillas to keep this recipe gluten-free (you can either use white corn tortillas or yellow corn tortillas or make your own homemade corn tortillas). However, you may also use flour tortillas if you prefer not to use corn-based tortillas.
- Seasonings: In this recipe, you’ll find 4 different seasonings for making your own homemade corn tortilla chips. You can of course keep it simple and air fry the tortilla chips without any seasonings at all, or use a simple salt and olive oil seasoning, or make the seasoning as flavorful as you wish (totally up to you!). I used granulated garlic, granulated onion, ground turmeric, dried herbs, ground paprika, ground cumin, but you can also use other seasonings such as chili powder if you prefer.
- Olive Oil: I like using extra virgin olive oil, but feel free to use the vegetable oil of your choice (sunflower oil, corn oil, canola oil, avocado oil, etc).
How to Make Air Fryer Corn Tortilla Chips (Step by Step):
1. Prepare Seasonings
In separate saucers, mix the following:
(i) Pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of olive oil;
(ii) Pinch of salt, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, granulated onion, granulated garlic, ground turmeric powder;
(iii) Pinch of salt, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, ground paprika, and ground cumin;
(iv) Pinch of salt, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and dried herbs.
2. Brush Corn Tortillas with Seasoning
Using a pastry brush, brush both sides of the tortilla with one of the four different seasoning mixtures.
3. Cut Seasoned Corn Tortillas into Pieces
Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to cut each seasoned corn tortilla into small triangles (approximately 1 to 2 inches wide).
4. Preheat Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 360F and spray air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil spray.
5. Air Fry Tortilla Pieces
For the first batch of seasoned tortillas, place the cut tortilla wedges in the air fryer basket and fry for 2 minutes at 360F.
Shake the air fried corn chips and fry for 1 more minute until they are golden brown, then set aside the crispy tortilla chips.
6. Repeat Until All Tortilla Chips Are Done
Repeat for the other three batches of corn tortilla chips.
7. Serve and Enjoy
Serve the homemade corn tortilla chips with your favorite dips or favorite salsa.
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- Do NOT Overcrowd: It is important that you do NOT overcrowd the air fryer basket with too many tortilla chips at once or they will not crisp up properly. It’s fine if you have to cook the chips in multiple batches (the number of batches you’ll make will depend on the size of your air fryer).
- No Air Fryer? Use the Oven: If you don’t have an air fryer, simply make these homemade corn chips in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350F, then place the seasoned tortilla triangles in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silpat and then bake on the middle rack for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping the chips over after the first 7 minutes.
Recipe FAQs:
Not all corn tortillas are gluten-free, as some of them are made with a mixture of both corn and wheat (which contains gluten). If you are Celiac or gluten-intolerant, make sure that you use certified gluten-free corn tortillas.
To store, place the cooled leftover tortilla chips in an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 3 days. If the air fried corn tortilla chips are not as crispy as before, reheat them in the air fryer at 360F for 1 minute to crisp them up again.
