What are Pita Chips?
Pita chips (or pita toasts) are basically pieces of pita bread that have been cut (often in triangle shapes) and toasted until crusty (depending on how toasted they are, they may often resemble crackers).
Are Pita Chips Gluten-Free?
Traditionally, pita chips are made by toasting pita bread made with wheat flour (which contains gluten). Hence normal pita chips are not safe for Celiacs or those with gluten intolerance, unless they are specifically stated to be gluten-free.
Today I’ll show you how to make your own pita chips – it’s a delicious snack that incredibly easy and fast to make!

Recipe Notes + Substitutions:
- Pita Bread: I used gluten-free pita bread (you can either get store-bought pita bread or make your own) to keep this recipe gluten-free. Alternatively, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, feel free to use regular pita bread or whole wheat pitas instead.)
- Spices: I used a mix of ground coriander, granulated garlic, and ground paprika for the seasoning. Feel free to use your favorite spices and favorite seasonings (such as onion powder, ground cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, chili powder, everything bagel seasoning etc). Alternatively, you can also leave out the spices if you rather not use any.
- Olive Oil: I like using extra virgin olive oil, but you can also use another vegetable oil of your choice (such as canola oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, melted coconut oil etc).
How to Make Pita Chips in Air Fryer (Step by Step):
1. Preheat Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 360F and spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
2. Cut Pita Bread into Triangles
Using a pizza cutter, a pair of scissors or a sharp knife, cut the gluten-free pitas into small triangles or strips, as desired. Place the cut pieces in a bowl.
3. Season Pita Triangles
Pour the olive oil into a bowl, and add the salt and spices. Mix everything thoroughly.
(TIP: Alternatively, you can also use a pastry brush to brush the pita bread with olive oil on both sides. Then sprinkle salt and spices over the oiled pitas. Finally, cut the seasoned pitas into small triangles or squares.)
4. Air Fry Pita Pieces
Put the pita pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket and air-fry for 3 minutes.
(TIP: Try not to overlap the pita triangles if possible.)
5. Shake Air Fryer Basket
After 3 minutes, shake the basket and air fry pita chips for another 2 minutes until the homemade chips are golden brown.
6. For Extra Crispy Chips
If you want more toasted and crispy pita chips, go ahead and cook them for another 2 minutes.
7. Repeat Until All Pita Pieces Are Cooked
Repeat the process until all the pita chips are cooked.
(Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to cook the chips in 2-3 batches).
8. Serve and Enjoy
Serve these delicious air fryer pita chips with your favorite dip and enjoy!
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- Cut Pita Bread in Any Shape: I cut the pita bread into triangles, but you can also cut the pitas into rectangles or squares if you prefer.
- Want Crispier Chips? If you like really crispy air fryer pita chips, simply toast them for longer in the air fryer until they reach your desired texture.
- Make Sweet Pita Chips: If you want a sweet version of these, simply swap out the salt and spices for cinnamon sugar.
