Gluten-free Flours
If you follow a gluten-free diet, there are many types of gluten-free flours that you can use for baking – including but not limited to rice flour, almond flour, cashew flour, corn flour, buckwheat flour, sorghum flour, millet flour, and amaranth flour, just to name a few.
Among the numerous gluten-free flours that are available, rice flour is probably the one I use the most (and I imagine it’s also what people on a gluten-free diet are most accustomed to).
MakeYour Own Rice Flour at Home
While white rice flour is very easily found, brown rice flour may not be that commonly available. I like using brown rice flour in certain recipes because it has a higher fiber content and a less starchy feel.
If you enjoy using brown rice flour too, but sometimes find yourself out of it, and not able to get it in the stores, here’s a quick solution – I’ll show you how to make brown rice flour at home!
What Do You Need for Homemade Brown Rice Flour?
The only ingredient you’ll need to make homemade brown rice flour is literally just uncooked brown rice. If you prefer to make white rice flour instead, all you need to do is use uncooked white rice instead of brown.
As for kitchen tools required, you’ll need a high-speed blender and a fine-mesh sieve for optimum results.
How to Make Brown Rice Flour
1. First Round Processing:
Place 1 cup uncooked brown rice in your high-speed blender.
Process the rice grains for 30 seconds to 1 minute until you get a flour. It will not be super smooth yet, but don’t worry.
2. Sift the Flour
Pass the flour through a fine-mesh sieve to filter out any large grains that were not fully processed.
3. Second-Round Processing
Return the sifted brown rice flour to the blender and process it for another 30 seconds to 1 minute until very smooth.
4. Repeat Until Done
Repeat the above process with the remaining rice until all the rice has been processed into a smooth flour.
5. Use or Store
Use the rice flour according to your recipe or if not using immediately, store the homemade rice flour in an airtight jar at room temperature.
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks
- Double or Triple the Recipe as Required: If you use brown rice flour frequently (as I do in baking gluten-free breads and other baked goods), I would recommend that you double or triple the recipe (which makes 2 1/4 cup of homemade brown rice flour). This ensures that you have sufficient brown rice flour on hand for at least a few baked goods. Alternatively, if you don’t use brown rice flour that often and only require it for a certain recipe, make just enough so you don’t have to worry about it turning bad.
Recipe FAQs:
If you prefer to make white rice flour instead, simply use uncooked white rice instead of brown rice. The procedure is the same.
To store the flour, simple place the homemade brown rice flour in an airtight glass jar and store at room temperature for up to 3 months.

Hello. After getting home from going around countless places to find brown rice flour & the only one I could find was 1 kg for $9.50 Aus I thought I reckon I can make this myself a lot cheaper!,
I straight away Googled and found your site. Thankyou. It’s so simple.
Also I so love that your Mum wrote a question to you on here. That’s just the kind of thing my daughter and I would do. So lovely. Now to make my kg of flour for $2.00:😀
Cheers Karyn.

Hi Karyn, I know what you mean about gluten-free flours being ridiculously expensive these days! Glad you managed to make your own brown rice flour, hope it was easy and that going forward you can just grind your own at home! Thanks for your lovely note, and hope to see you around the blog again sometime soon!
xx,
Felicia

Hi Felicia. Can I toast the rice kernels first or will this take away from the effects of the flour? I mostly use the flour in dog & cat treats.
Felicia Lim says
Hi Susan, toasting the kernels first shouldn’t be an issue!

Good morning Felicia,
Do we need to wash and dry the rice before blending them or can we just go ahead and blend into flour?
Thanks in advance for your confirmation.
With love and blessings always!
Mum
Felicia Lim says
Hi mummy! No need to wash the rice, just grind it directly 😉
