What is Halloumi?
If you’ve never heard of or tried halloumi (sometimes also spelt ‘haloumi’) before, it is a firm, white cheese made up of a mixture of goat’s milk and sheep’s milk.
Because it also has a very high melting point, halloumi cheese is great for frying or grilling, and is a great meat substitute.
I love eating grilled halloumi tossed in a large green salad (definitely one of my favorite salads back in Buenos Aires).
Delicious Halloumi Fries
But today, I wanted to make halloumi the star of the show, so we’re making these flavorful and crispy halloumi fries…in the air fryer!
With a crispy outer layer, and a chewy interior, these fries make easy snacks that the whole family will love!
Why This Recipe Works:
- Simple Ingredients: The main ingredients for these delicious air fryer halloumi fries are easily found at the local grocery store.
- Easy to Make: All we need to do is coat the pieces of halloumi cheese sticks in a spice-flavored flour mixture, before cooking it in the air fryer until golden brown and crispy!
- Totally Gluten-Free: The best part is that this air fryer halloumi fries recipe is 100% gluten-free, which means that even those with Celiac disease or gluten intolerances can enjoy this perfect appetizer without issues.

Recipe Notes + Substitutions:
- Halloumi Cheese: Since this is a recipe for halloumi fries, halloumi cheese is a key ingredient here. However, if you don’t have halloumi cheese, provolone cheese or mozzarella cheese would work too.
- Gluten-Free Flour: I recommend using a good-quality gluten-free measure-for-measure flour (a 1:1 gluten-free substitute for regular all-purpose flour) that is made up of lighter flours/starches such as rice flour, tapioca starch, corn starch, and potato starch). I do NOT recommend using a gluten-free flour blend that is made up of heavier flours (such as garbanzo bean flour).
- Olive Oil: I like using extra virgin olive oil, but feel free to use another vegetable oil of choice (such as canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil).
- Spices & Herbs: For flavoring, I used a mix of ground paprika, granulated garlic, and dried parsley. However, feel free to use other herbs or spices of your choice too (such as black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, etc).
How to Make Air Fryer Halloumi Fries (Step by Step):
1. Preheat Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 360F and spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Prepare Flour Coating
In a shallow bowl, combine the gluten-free measure-for-measure flour, ground paprika, granulated garlic, dried parsley and salt.
3. Coat Halloumi Strips with Flour Mixture
Roll the halloumi strips in the dry flour mixture until the strips are completely coated.
4. Place in Air Fryer Basket
Place the flour-coated halloumi sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket and lightly drizzle or gently brush the tops of the halloumi sticks with olive oil.
5. Cook Halloumi Fries
Air-fry the halloumi sticks for about 7 minutes, until golden brown, then flip the fries over, drizzle the tops with olive oil and cook for another 5 minutes.
6. Serve and Enjoy
Serve the air-fried halloumi fries hot, with your favorite dipping sauce.
Dish by Dish Tips/Tricks:
- Make Halloumi Bites: If you prefer smaller cheese bites, you can cut the halloumi cheese into cubes instead of strips.
- Other Cheeses: If you don’t have halloumi cheese, provolone cheese or mozzarella cheese would work too.
- No Air Fryer? If you don’t own an air fryer, you may also pan-fry these halloumi sticks in oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (approximately 3-4 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown, before flipping over and cooking until all the other sides are also golden).
Serve Halloumi Fries with:
- Sriracha Chili Sauce (Gluten-Free, Vegan)
- Sriracha Aioli (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)
- Copycat Raising Cane’s Sauce (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)
- Hearty Marinara Sauce (Gluten-Free, Vegan)
- Garlic Aioli (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)
